White-on-White Challenge: The Guild’s Board would like to
challenge the membership to a year-long white-on-white challenge.
White-on-white is an example of “tone-on-tone,” which About.Com’s
quilting glossary defines as “… fabric that is made by combining
different shades and tones of the same color. Tone on tone fabrics
often appear to be solid when viewed from a distance, but their
printed motifs become recognizable on closer inspection.”
For the next year, we propose that guild members try to weave or
spin a white-on-white piece. This challenge is informal and aimed to
inspire us to think about what we can do with color in new ways.
That means, if you already have a piece you want to share – please
do. If you would prefer exploring tone-on-tone in another color –
we’d love to see that, too. We will work on places to exhibit the
results of the challenge during the course of the year – the first
being at the Guild sale in March 2010.
I stumbled onto how intriguing this notion could be when I was
trying to use up some White zephyr on a scarf, and discovered that I
wouldn’t have enough. I decided to add Vanilla zephyr randomly
throughout the warp, hoping “no one would notice.” It’s very
noticeable, and my favorite part of the scarf! If you have questions
or would like to talk about this more, please feel free to contact
Martha Graham (505/266-6615 or themarthag@aol.com). |

Camille Segretto Service Project: This
time of year we become inundated with appeals from worthy, and not-so-worthy!,
causes. So much so that we tend to ignore nearly all of them. But this is one
appeal I hope you'll answer. We are in need of more scarves, shawls, and/ or
cowls for our chemo scarf collection. Our collection stands at 35 scarves and 2
hats at this time. We would love to have many more to give. With the weather
turning cold and nippy we like to deliver the items to the UNM Cancer Center in
early December, after the Holiday Party. Please consider weaving, knitting, or
crocheting an item to help a chemo patient through a trying time. There are only
two guidelines for the scarves/shawls/cowls: 1.) must be a soft, non-scratchy,
no-itch fiber and 2.) prefer machine washable. No other limitations, so feel
free to experiment! Free knitting and crochet patterns abound on the internet.
One very good resource is www.ravelry.com. The scarves may be left at the
Village Wools library or given to Sally Rogers. Thank you. |
